President John Mahama has been challenged to hold his ministers accountable by making sure they fulfil their promises. The Executive Director of the African Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP), Ibrahim Adams who made the suggestion based his call on the decision by the former Power Minister, Kwabena Donkor to resign after failing to fulfil his promise to end the frequent power outages.
Mr. Adams pointed out that Ministers, just like what Kwabena Donkor, should also declare what they will do when they assume positions so they can be held accountable. “Just applying this principle to one Minister is not enough. It will be good for other Ministers to publicly declare upon assumption of office what they will do based on which the President can hold all of them to their promise.
“Even though Dr. Kwabena Donkor was reportedly forced to resign by making a public declaration of what he could do, I think he introduced a new concept of public governance and public accountability into our governance system and for the President to also respond by asking him to resign because the problem has not been solved also shows that if the President can apply that to other Ministers he will be setting very good precedence and I will give him high marks for that. “ Kwabena Donkor was not the only person to resign in 2015 after failing to fulfill his promises.
