President John Dramani Mahama will begin a State Visit to the Republic of Belarus today, Friday, 5 June 2026, the Minister of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu has announced.Remove ads
The visit is at the invitation of His Excellency Aleksandr Grigorievich Lukashenko, President of the Republic of Belarus.
The visit aims to strengthen diplomatic ties between Ghana and Belarus. It will also explore new frontiers in economic, agricultural, and technical cooperation. Upon arrival in Minsk, President Mahama will lay a wreath at the Victory Monument. This gesture honours Soviet Army soldiers and Belarusian partisans who showed immense bravery during World War II.
A stamenet issued by Mr Kwakye Ofosu said that a central highlight will be a high-level meeting between the two Heads of State. President Mahama and President Lukashenko will hold private bilateral talks. This will be followed by an expanded diplomatic session with ministers and senior officials from both countries. The discussions will focus on strategic partnerships in Agriculture, Education, and Commerce.
In line with President Mahama’s industrialisation and food security agenda, he will travel to Brest, one of Belarus’ most historic western cities. There, he will tour one of the region’s largest processors of milk, cheese, and baby products. This visit is expected to facilitate knowledge sharing and potential partnerships in agro-processing.
While in Brest, President Mahama will also visit the Brest Hero Fortress Memorial Complex, where he will pay respects at the site of the 1941 Soviet defence against Nazi forces.
The itinerary includes a visit to Belovezhskaya Pushcha National Park. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Europe’s last remaining primaeval forests. This visit underscores the two countries’ commitment to environmental conservation.
The State Visit will include the signing of at least four landmark bilateral agreements. These agreements are designed to foster mutual growth and institutional collaboration between Ghana and Belarus.
President Mahama is expected to depart Belarus and return to Accra on Tuesday, 9 June 2026.
