The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the National Sports Authority, Frederica Mensah, has revealed that attendance and gate proceeds realised from the Ghana-Rwanda 2017 Africa Nations Cup final qualifier at the Accra Sports Stadium on Saturday September 3 was about the lowest in recent times.
The Black Stars, who had already qualified for the African football showpiece prior to the game, could only manage a one-all draw with the East African nation. Ms Mensah, speaking to Class Sports’ Hussein Hassan, said attendance was poor compared to other Black Stars matches in recent times.
“4,233 tickets were sold, excluding those of the supporters unions and security. The amount realised from that sale was GHS59,780, which is the lowest we have had for the Black Stars in recent months. The last match before the Ghana-Rwanda [encounter] was the game against Mozambique at the Accra Sports Stadium which saw us make over GHS100,000. Comparing that to this one, I will say this one is very low,” she stated.
Ms Mensah denied claims by Black Stars coach Avram Grant the NSA turned deaf ears to his request for the pitch to be watered during the break period. “…With what I gathered from our Head of Estate, Mr Grant never communicated to him on watering the pitch which was the case in the past. I wouldn’t want to blame the Black Stars coach but I think there’s some miscommunication somewhere,” she said.
