Frank Annoh Dompreh, a member of the Ghanaian parliament and the Majority Chief Whip, has suggested to Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif that he consider replacing Black Stars coach Chris Hughton if it would improve the team’s chances of success at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The Nsawam-Adoagyiri MP’s statement comes amid concerns over the team’s recent poor performance under Hughton, with three losses in their last four matches.
Dompreh emphasised the importance of the Black Stars performing well at the upcoming tournament in Ivory Coast, stating that the team’s recent form is unacceptable and that changes must be made to ensure success.
“Minster, you’ll agree with me that these days our Black Stars is becoming a pale shadow of itself,” Dompreh said.
“As we are heading towards another African tournament, we urge you to do everything and anything, including the changing of our national coach, if need be.
“We can’t just go there and be part of the number of teams. We’ve always said that we are four-time champions; this thing is becoming old time glory.
Black Stars are set to face Cape Verde in their opening match on January 14, just 25 days from now.
With the pressure mounting, it remains to be seen whether Hughton will remain at the helm of the team or if a change in leadership will be made before the tournament begins.
