British Prime Minister Theresa May has sent a congratulatory message assuring President-elect Nana Akufo-Addo of deeper ties.
The flag bearer of the main opposition party, Mr Akufo-Addo, beat incumbent John Mahama and five other candidates by securing 53.85 per cent of valid votes to become Ghana’s fifth president in the Fourth Republic.
In a letter dated December 13 and made available to classfmonline.com, Ms May said she recognised that it was a hard-fought campaign and the margin of victory was impressive.
She said UK and Ghana “share a strong and long-standing relationship, and one which I value deeply” adding: “I believe that the period ahead offers us a great opportunity to do more together.”
Ms May underscored that she looked forward to continuing the excellent co-operation between the two nations on defence, drugs, crime, and national security, and to working together on challenges such as tackling corruption.
“Alongside our ongoing support to Ghana in areas such as governance, poverty reduction, education, and health, I hope that we can look to deepen our economic co-operation,” she added.
Ms May wished Ghana success adding that she was looking forward to meeting Mr Akufo-Addo when he visits London.
