The presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), former President John Dramani Mahama, has expressed confidence that this year’s election will be peaceful and successful if everything is properly managed in the lead-up to it.
Mahama made these remarks while receiving a delegation from the West African Elders Forum, led by former President of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan.
Mahama explained that while everyone desires a peaceful election, such an outcome is dependent on the groundwork and preparation that takes place before the election.
He emphasized that if the country gets everything right in the lead-up, the election will be peaceful and successful.
Mahama also reiterated the NDC’s unwavering commitment to a peaceful election, and stressed the importance of cooperation, particularly with the Electoral Commission (EC), which is expected to act as a neutral arbiter.
He expressed optimism that, with collaboration, Ghana can get it right once again.
“We have an election in 61 days and there have been a few issues bubbling back and forth especially with the electoral commission and issues to do with the register, so we are happy a high delegation is here to go through some of the concerns we have”
“We all want a peaceful election but the peaceful election is predicated on the ground work, the preparation that is done before the election. I’m sure that if we get everything right in the lead-up to the election then the election will be transparent and successful but we are committed to a peaceful election and we believe that if we cooperate with each other especially with the EC that is supposed to be neutral arbiter and ampere, we should be able to get it right again”
Meanwhile, Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has commended John Dramani Mahama, the former President of Ghana, for his significant role in ensuring peaceful and credible elections in Nigeria.
According to him, Ghana has always been on the good side when it comes to peaceful democratic practices, stating that they are very hopeful this election will be peaceful, as it has always been.
He also emphasized that everyone has a key role to play in the upcoming elections, including the political parties, candidates, security forces, and the media, to ensure a successful election because, in his view, it is human beings who create chaos.
