Nine persons have been arrested across the country in connection with post-electoral violence, Police Director of Public Affairs Cephas Arthur has disclosed.
There have been reports of attacks on supporters of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) across the country after the party lost the December 7 election to the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The NDC, in a presser on Thursday December 15, urged supporters to defend themselves if the attacks allegedly perpetrated by NPP supporters do not stop.
Speaking on the Executive Breakfast Show (EBS) on Class91.3FM on Friday December 16 regarding the activities of the police to curb the attacks, Mr Arthur said police were working hard to bring perpetrators to book.
“We have arrested nine persons in all and it’s not just an arrest, we have taken [extra] steps. We have put them before court. Five of them have been granted bail pending the trial and one of them was remanded in custody pending trial. The last time I checked we were working on the other three to put them before court. So you realise that we are not sitting down not doing anything about the incident. We are up in arms against people who are perpetrating acts of criminality,” he stated.
According to him, political parties were not aware of the role the police was playing to bring the situation under control.
Supt Arthur stated: “Either they are not aware of the steps we have taken so they think that the state institution that is supposed to come to their aid to safeguard their interest is not doing so so they think they can’t sit down and get attacked or they don’t know that this violence has even ceased. For the past three days I haven’t heard of any fresh case of attack anywhere, so you see that it is the old thing that we are all rehashing. So I can assure them there is no cause for alarm.”
