The Asante Bekwai Circuit Court has sentenced a 20-year-old mechanic to 25 years in prison with hard labour for phone theft.
Akwasi Agyemang, who stole a student’s iPhone 7 and an itel cellular phone, was found guilty by the Court presided over by Isaac Apeatu and sentenced accordingly.
Detective Chief Inspector Eric Twum told the court that the complainant is a pregnant Senior High School form three student and a neighbour to Agyemang in Asanso.
He said on August 25, 2024, at about 0000 hours, the complainant was sleeping in her room when Agyemang forced his way in.
The Prosecution said Agyemang ordered the complainant to hand over her valuables at knifepoint to avoid being stabbed.
Detective Chief Inspector Twum said she complied out of fear for her life, and Agyemang grabbed her iPhone 7, worth GH₵1,400.00, and an itel phone, worth GH₵1,000.00.
Agyemang then raped the victim and fled.
The Court heard that the victim raised an alarm which drew the attention of the Assembly Member in the neighbourhood, as well as other community members.
Detective Chief Inspector Twum said Agyemang was pursued and arrested, and that a search of him revealed the two mobile phones and knife.
Agyemang was then turned over to the police for further investigation, while the complainant was given a police medical report form and instructed to go to the hospital.
Agyemang was arraigned after investigations.
