Editor of the Al-Hajj Newspaper, Alhaji Bature Iddrisu has said the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) will be stupid to allow a new voters register to be compiled ahead of the 2016 general election.
According to him, the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) and its assigns such as the Let My Vote Count Alliance are demanding for a new voter album as a ploy to stuff the album should one be compiled with scores of other unqualified persons, especially in its strongholds, to better the party’s chances of winning the elections.
The NPP has severally called for a new voters register insisting the current one is bloated with nationals of neighboring countries.
At a news conference recently, NPP’s running mate, Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia alleged that 76,000 names of Togolese nationals who are registered to vote in their country can be found in the Ghanaian electoral roll and hence the Electoral Commission must get new voters register.
The NPP on Wednesday joined forces with pressure groups such as Let My Vote Count Alliance, Movement for Change and Alliance for Accountable Governance (AFAG) in a demonstration that turned violent, which was in support of the compilation of a new register.
However speaking on Si Mi So on Kasapa 102.3 FM, Alhaji Bature Iddrisu stated that NDC will pay dearly and have itself to blame if it is not able to block the compiling of a new register.
“I tell you this call for a new voters register is just a ploy by the NPP. In their stronghold of Ashanti Region, they will stop people from the Zongos where the NDC gets huge votes in elections from registering when a new album is opened. People of northern extraction and with tribal marks will not be allowed to register; the NPP will claim such persons are from Burkina Faso and Mali.
In the year 2008, a woman at Ejisu in Kumasi, a true Ashanti woman because she had converted to Islam and had veil wrapped around her, was denied the opportunity of voting insisting she was a foreigner. This is what the NPP wants to do. They will stuff the register with hundreds of minors in their strongholds. Possibly the number of bloated persons on the register will rise from the alleged 14 million to 18 million.
