Mohammed Polo has slammed Black Stars coach Chris Hughton and called for his removal following the team’s disappointing 0-0 draw against Madagascar in a 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.
Sunday’s match marked Hughton’s third game in charge, and his tenure has yielded just one victory, which came against Angola in Kumasi with a last-minute goal from Antoine Semenyo. The remaining away matches resulted in underwhelming draws.
The former Ghana international believes that there are local coaches who can outperform the former Brighton and Hove Albion manager. He argued that Hughton should be replaced with a coach who understands the intricacies of excellent football and can bring out the best in the players.
“In the local league, we have better coaches who play quality football and are far superior to Chris,” Polo expressed his opinion in an interview with Rainbow Sports.
“We have witnessed the level of excellence they bring to their games and the calibre of players they develop. These coaches are unquestionably superior to the current coach of the Black Stars. We must dismiss him and appoint a better coach who understands excellent football.”
When asked about potential replacements for Hughton from the local scene, Polo highlighted Kasim Mingle of Bechem United and Michael Osei of Goldstars as suitable candidates.
“I want to emphasise that these coaches have played quality football and should be selected or appointed as the head coach of the national team,” Polo stated. “The quality players we see in the local league are trained and nurtured by our local coaches. So, if these coaches are developing fantastic players and playing quality football, we should give them the job because they deserve it.”
