A 25-year-old Ghanaian woman has been left with serious eye injuries after her face was dipped into a paste of blended pepper by her Lebanese supervisor at the Marwako restaurant, Abelenkpe, on Sunday February 26.
Evelyn Boakye, speaking to Accra News after the incident, said she was performing her duties at the restaurant where she mainly blends pepper when the attack happened.
She explained that after blending the first quantity of pepper, she transferred the resulting mixture into a container and was blending the next amount of pepper when her supervisor, Jihad Chaban, approached her from behind describing her as “stupid” and a “prostitute” for trying to “destroy” his blender owing to the unusual noise coming from the appliance. Jihad seized the blender from her and smashed it on the table, spilling the paste before, smearing Evelyn’s face in the mixture.
The Lebanese subsequently detained Evelyn in a room at the restaurant until after 10pm, warning the rest of the staff, who the victim said all looked on helplessly as she was abused, to keep mum on the matter or be dismissed.
Evelyn said she had had no issue with her supervisor and was at a loss over her treatment at the hands of Jihad. She has reported the matter to the Tesano Police and has been to the Achimota Hospital for treatment for the eye injuries, though she said her eye oozes liquid while watching TV or walking in the sun
“I look forward to justice being served. These foreigners come here to maltreat us in our own country because we are poor and unable to speak up [when abused],” she added.
Evelyn revealed abuse of staff at the restaurant was a regular occurrence and she was the fifth worker to have been assaulted by Lebanese staff there.
When contacted, Accra Police PRO Afia Tengey confirmed police received a complaint on the matter after which it invited Jihad to write his statement. According to her, upon police investigations, Jihad was not the only person involved in the alleged assault of Evelyn but has been granted bail together with his accomplices and are to return to the Accra Police Command on Tuesday March 7.
“So I can confirm we have received the report and we have invited Jihad who has written his report. The regional commander has directed that the suspects be paraded before him on Tuesday because of the long weekend,” she disclosed.
