The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress, John Dramani Mahama, recently declared his strong stance against corruption, affirming that he will not shield any appointees involved in corrupt activities.
During his campaign tour in the Greater Accra Region, Mahama criticized President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, accusing him of acting as “a clearing agent” by consistently exonerating his appointees when they are accused of corruption.
The former president made these remarks during an interaction with supporters at Nsakina in the Amasaman Constituency.
Mahama explained that, if he becomes president, all those who have stolen money from the government will be held accountable in an initiative he termed “Operation Recover All the Loot.”
The NDC flagbearer also stated that he will not tolerate corruption in his government, emphasizing that anyone who serves in his administration and is accused of wrongdoing will be subjected to investigation.
Mahama made it clear that he will not protect any appointee found guilty, and will instead allow the law to take its course.
“I’m not going to be a clearing agent, if God permits and the Ghanaians give me the power as the president, we will arrest all those who have left power and stole the governments money will be arrested and be held accountable to Ghanaians.”
“If you have stolen our money, you will have to return it. That’s what we call ‘Operation Recover All the Loot.’ Whatever someone has taken, we will ensure it is recovered.”
“As I am not a clearing agent, if you are an appointee in my government and are found guilty, you will be dealt with accordingly.”
Mr. Mahama further explained that his government will ensure that anti-corruption agencies are allowed to do their work without interference.
He further claimed that due to the mismanagement by the current government, each Ghanaian now owes GHC 20,000, a debt burden he believes is impossible for citizens to pay.
He contrasted this with the situation during the tenures of Kwame Nkrumah and his own administration, where each Ghanaian owed only GHC 4,000 based on the country’s debt.
