The Electricity Company of Ghana in Takoradi has started an aggressive campaign to recover over 18 million Ghana cedis in debt owed the company by some public institutions in the region.
The campaign by the power distributor is aimed at forcing customers to pay the accumulated bills.
The company has so far cut power supply to the main administrative block of the Takoradi Polytechnic and the GBC transmission station in Tarkwa. Takoradi Polytechnic owes 952,000 cedis.
Western Region Commercial Manager of ECG, Alex Anwobor says key installations in the region including the Takoradi Naval base are indebted to the company.
Also, the Effia Nkwanta Hospital, according to him, owes the company 629,000 cedis while the Takoradi Air force owes 2.65 million cedis.
The Ministry of Defence also owes 2.643 million cedis.
Meanwhile the ECG is starting a programme to improve power distribution in the Takoradi Market Circle.
Management believes the exercise will help reduce fire outbreaks in the market.
