The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana, as part of its mandate to execute the 7 December elections, will recruit a total of 146,000 individuals for various duties, chairperson of the commission Mrs Charlotte Osei has announced.
“We will advertise the positions publicly, we will also have an online application system,” she added.
She said a committee has outlined different qualifications and skill sets that will be required for every electoral officer.
The EC boss, who spoke in an interview with Paul Adom-Otchere on Metro TV’s Good Evening programme on Thursday, 11 August explained that prospective applicants will be screened and made to go through vetting before appointment.
She stated that the committee that would make the selection would have a right to reject applicants who are “not politically neutral”.
Meanwhile, the EC chair has indicated her intention to stay away from casting her ballot in the upcoming presidential and parliamentary polls.
Ghana goes to the polls on December 7, 2016, to elect a president and 275 lawmakers to run the country for the next four years, but Mrs Osei, who heads the election management body, has said she will waive the “special privilege” to vote during the special voting, which will be held a few days ahead of the main polls for members of the commission, security personnel, journalists, and other persons who will be engaged on the day of the polls.
