The Ghana Immigration Comptroller General, Mr Kwame Assuah Takyi, has described allegations by an Indian businessman, Ashok Kumar Sivaram, that the Minister for the Interior, Ambrose Dery, and the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) were harassing him as shocking and misleading.
Mr Sivaram accused the two men and the Deputy Comptroller General in-charge of Operations at the GIS, Laud Afrifa, of conspiring to dispossess him of his own firm, Jai Mai Communications Limited, and hand it over to his business partner, thus doing everything possible to deport him from Ghana.
In a petition dated 15 August 2017, Mr Sivaram said: “Mr. President, the action of the respondents is a deliberate ploy to render my status in the country without a valid permit in order to easily facilitate my removal from the jurisdiction.
“This action by the respondents is also a clear attempt to undermine the order for valuation of the company by the High Court dated 5th May, 2017. Mr President, I implore you as the father of the nation to graciously step in to resolve the matters raised in my petition. I shall forever be grateful to you for your prompt action on this matter.”
But reacting to the claim in an interview with Accra based Citi FM, Mr Takyi said Mr Sivaram was misleading the public.
“He has misled the public and thrown dust into the eyes of the public. We are surprised he has petitioned the president because you go to court, the court has given a ruling in your favour. We have filed stay of execution and notice of appeal. The court orders that bring your client before immigration. We write to you on the 14th which was Tuesday and on Tuesday evening we receive this mandamus that he has filed with a date yet to be fixed by the court for us to argue in court requesting that the court should order us to restore his working permit,” Mr Takyi said.
He added: “In his petition, he talked of a ploy between the Minister of Interior and Ghana Immigration Service to deprive him of his lawful business. What will the Minister of Interior, Ambrose Dery, gain by interfering in the business of a foreign expatriate? What is he going to gain or what is the Comptroller General of Immigration going to gain? Why should you petition the president when you have a matter in court when you are filing an application for mandamus?”
