The Electoral Commission (EC) has sacked two of its officers in the Walewale constituency in the Northern Region for going against its regulations, the commission’s Deputy Communications Officer for the EC, Yussif Alhassan Ayuba, has stated.
Jobey Ambrose and Mumuni Latiffa, the officers in question, were alleged to have moved electoral materials from the Kperiga polling centre in the region to the residence of the vice-presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, to get him verified in his home.
“At no point are you supposed to go to someone’s house for him to check his details, and based on this the people were relieved of their duties,” he disclosed.
According to Mr Ayuba, it is against the rules and regulations of the commission to undertake such exercise outside a designated centre. Upon receiving the information, the commission decided to replace the officials and launch an investigation into the matter.
“I was told that the officials had left the exhibition centre around 5:30 pm because it was threatening to rain but the rain failed,” he narrated.
Mr Ayuba said someone called the exhibition officers, according to the information he gathered, indicating that some people had come to the centre to check their names.
The officials then came back to the centre and realised that the people had left and entered some houses close to the exhibition centre. They followed up to those residences but found no persons in the house, but on their return they realised it was Dr Bawumia who had come to the centre earlier to check his name.
“When they met him, they followed him back to his house and they checked his name on the register and verified but you know it is an irregularity. We had emphatically told the officials that they are supposed to be sitting at the exhibition centre,” he stressed.
He said they had compiled information from the EC supervisor at the constituency and a team would be deployed to conduct further investigations.
