Police in the Ashanti Region have warned they will deal ruthlessly with perpetrators of mob attacks.
The officers have called on members of the public to desist from taking the law into their hands by being quick to launch instant justice on victims of crime.
The Police expressed worry that the region was gradually gaining notoriety in mob attacks.
A recent incident was the stripping of a lady after she was accused of stealing at Kejetia.
A taxi driver was also lynched by a marauding youth at Sawaba in Kumasi after he knocked down a pedestrian. A 27-year-old who is believed to have played a major role in the lynching of the driver, has been arrested to assist in investigations.
Speaking to the media, Ashanti Regional Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Nketiah Yeboah, said the police would not spare perpetrators of mob attacks if arrested.
“Members of the public are either intentionally taking into their own hands the laws of the land but ignorance of the law is no excuse. That is why it’s very important that when something goes wrong or when even your relative is murdered or beaten you just have to report the case to the police you don’t have to take the law into your own hands. This is a challenge that I have observed. Such lawless people if you are not fortunate and somebody identifies you there is a big trouble for such individuals. It’s a crime. People shouldn’t assume that its only thieves and robbers who are criminals…one cannot take the laws into his or her hands…”
