The Yapei bridge in the Northern Region will from today, May 3, be closed to traffic at night to enable engineers undertake some emergency maintenance works.
The bridge will be closed at 6pm an opened at 6am the following morning.
Aminu Abubakar, manager of the Bridge Maintenance Unit at the Ghana Highway Authority (GHA), told Emefa Apawu on Class FM’s 505 news on Tuesday May 2 that the Yapei and Buipe bridges were constructed in the 1960s.
He revealed that currently the Yapei bridge is “outside its service life and stress on the joints is causing concrete slabs to remove”.
It would be recalled that the Buipe bridge also underwent some maintenance early this year.
Mr Abubakar noted that unlike users of the Buipe bridge who have an alternative route, those who ply the Yapei bridge have none.
He pleaded with the public to exercise restraint as the engineers work around the clock to finish the work by May 14.
