Members of the Invincible Forces, a private security arm within the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), have denied claims that they are behind the armed robberies in the country.
Minority spokesperson on Defence and Interior, James Agalga, last week accused President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of filling Ghana’s security agencies with members of Delta Forces and Invincible Forces, a situation he said contributed to heightened insecurity and lawlessness in the country.
Mr Agalga said in the wake of the violence and lawlessness perpetrated by some supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) after President Akufo-Addo was sworn in, including attacks on a Security Coordinator in the Ashanti Region and the storming of a court to release suspects standing trial for assault and violence, “the NDC called on President Akufo-Addo to immediately disband and demobilise the Invincible Forces, Delta Forces and other militant groups operating under the NPP”.
“President Akufo-Addo could not be bothered and took no action to stem the crippling lawlessness and insecurity. Instead, the President has rewarded them by integrating many of these criminal elements into national security.”
Addressing a press conference on Friday, 2 March 2018, Mr Agalga said: “We are reliably informed that members of these militant groups have recently undergone training at a camp at Asutsuare belonging to the military. We are further informed that the instructors include two South African mercenaries who were deported from the country in 2016 in the run-up to the general elections”.
Mr Agalga added that the recent rise in the spate of robberies and crime across the country, including “the killing of police in the line of duty, is unacceptable and requires action”.
But on Ghana Yensom on Accra 100.5FM hosted by Chief Jerry Forson on Monday, 5 March, Kwabena Boakye, spokesperson for the Invincible Forces said: “It is funny for anybody to associate us with the robberies that are occurring. Those making that claim do not know what they are talking about.
“We stayed in opposition for eight years and we never engaged in robbery, and, so, why should we engage in robbery at a time our party has come to power.
“We don’t support robbery, we are not behind the robberies.”
