The newly elected Presidential Candidate of the People`s national Convention (PNC), Dr. Edward Mahama, says his party is the alternative to the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
According to him, the two main political parties (NDC and NPP) have failed to better the fortunes of Ghanaians and the country as a whole.
Dr. Mahama, who led the party in the 1996, 2000, 2004 and the 2008 elections, polled 492 votes to beat 2012 Presidential Candidate, Hassan Ayariga who managed 426 votes in a close contest.
This will be his fifth attempt to become President.
Speaking to party supporters after his election in Wa, Dr. Edward Mahama said the PNC will provide visionary leadership to finding a lasting solution to the power crisis.
He stated his party is planning to roll out a programme christened “New Beginning, New Deal” which will be geared towards creating jobs for young graduates.
“The way forward is for us to start a programme which I will call ‘New beginning, New Deal. The purpose of this programme is to make sure that our young people, when they leave the tertiary institutions, polytechnics, universities and other courses, they will have a job,” he said. Dr. Mahama noted that solving the power problem would be key to realizing his solution to graduate unemployment. “This can only come about if we are able to address the dumsor problem, the energy problem, and we are promising that in the next several months, as we roll out our manifesto, we will propose suggestions as to how to cure dumsor and give Ghanaians power to produce.”
