An acute water shortage has hit some parts of Sunyani, the Brong Ahafo regional capital, as residents struggle for water for their domestic chores.
Areas such as Tonsuom Estate, Abesim, Magazine, New Dormaa, Penkwase, Kotokrom, Fiapre, among others have for over two weeks not had water flowing through their taps.
The situation has left many frustrated due to the hardship they have to go through before getting water for their daily activities.
But speaking to Class News, the Regional Manager for Ghana Water Company, Charles Brobbey, blamed the water shortage on the drying up of the Tano river, which is the main source of water in the area.
He said the plant would remain shut down until there are adequate rains to replenish the river.
“Now that we speak, we are even not producing… Somewhere around last month we realised our level was going down and based on that we reduced our production. We did half production for about two weeks and as I speak to you now we have stopped production and shut the plant. This is because there is no water flowing in the Tano river anymore,” he stated.
Mr Brobbey explained that the company has made available tanker services to serve the needs of residents.
“Our system here in Sunyani is based on surface water, that is, river water. But then when we realised that the level was going down, what we did was we tried to redevelop some few boreholes that we had in town. So we did that, tested them, and selected a few of them and we have already mechanised them. These are the source of support that we are currently now making available. We [have] tanker services for people who want to fetch some few gallons of water for themselves,” he stated.
He expressed the hope that the recent rains would continue in order to fill the Tano River and enable the company resume production.
