A 62-year-old woman has been shot dead at Alavanyo in the Volta Region.
The woman is reported to have gone out of her home to pick mangoes on Friday, May 20 when the incident happened, with residents suspecting that the recent land dispute between Alavanyo and Nkonya may have triggered the incident.
A former assemblyman for Alavanyo, Wisdom Kwame Amaldo, charged both factions to ensure an end to the evil act.
“That is the attitude of our people from Nkonya. They can just get to any place and shoot. After the shooting, they went uphill and started firing and the security here exchanged fire with them. As I speak there is calm in the area with no plans of retaliation,” he told Citi FM.
It would be recalled that Volta Regional Minister Dr Archibald Letsa promised intensified security after the death of a 12-year-old boy on Thursday, May 11.
Prince Kwakutsey, a primary six pupil, was shot by gunmen who broke into his parents’ home shortly after he had returned from school.
Police and military men have been patrolling the area to ensure calm as tensions have heightened in the town. The family of the deceased is demanding justice for the death of Prince and improved security protection.
Meanwhile, Dr Letsa, who spoke with Class FM’s Jonas Ofori-Yeboah on 12 Live, said that another victim who got injured was receiving treatment.
“These attacks are reprisals,” he said, adding that there was an attack in January at Alavanyo and another attack at Nkonya in April before the most recent one.
There is a long-standing land dispute between the people of Alavanyo and Nkonya that has resulted in many deaths for decades.
