Security analyst Nana Owusu Sekyere has called for the state to use the army to fight political vigilante groups in Ghana.
According to him, the police alone cannot tackle vigilante groups.
Responding to a question on Class91.3FM if it was time for the military to enter the fray as far as fighting political vigilantism is concerned, Nana Owusu Sekyere said: “It would not be too much and not out of place because it falls squarely under their area of work.”
The Ashanti Regional Police Command on Saturday, 25 March, picked up the leader of one of such groups for attacking Mr George Agyei, the Director of the Regional Coordinating Council.
Kwadwo Bamba, 37, an auto mechanic, allegedly led some well-built men of the Delta Force – the New Patriotic Party security arm in the region – to remove Mr Agyei from his office on Friday, 24 March on the grounds that he was not native to the region and played no part in the 2016 campaign, hence merits no appointment in the Akufo-Addo administration.
In a press release confirming the arrest, police said: “The suspect is currently in custody assisting in investigations, while those who have been identified and their names known to police will be sought to assist in investigations,” urging such persons to turn up “in their own interest” as the command will do “everything possible” to get them apprehended.
Meanwhile, Nana Sekyere has said: “One person does not represent the group; they are more than that.”
For him, the police must take tougher action to clamp down on the whole group and other vigilante groups.
He said the police should “go beyond the one [person arrested]”, adding: “The police in the Ashanti Region can do little. The problem we have at hand is bigger than the police service and what they are capable of handling.”
