President Nana Akufo-Addo has said that the United States of America, which is a world super power, is reaping the benefits of free senior high school implemented about a century ago, and Ghana must embrace government’s free SHS policy for future development.
According to him, “The first country in the world, in modern times anyway, to institute the system of free secondary public education was the United States of America. They did this a century ago at the time when their level of education was not very different from ours and I hope all of us in Ghana can see the connection between that event and where America is today as the economy power of the world.”
For him, if Ghanaians can decipher that connection every citizen will support government’s free SHS initiative.
He admitted that some glitches are expected as this is a new policy being implemented, but Ghanaians must understand its importance and not to see it as a political party’s mantra.
For him, the country is blessed with abundance of talent and creativity and the youth has a lot of contributions to make towards development of the society so “the opportunity must be provided for them to express themselves”.
He said such an initiative will spur the transformation that the public wants to see in Ghana.
Mr Akufo-Addo, who was speaking on Thursday, August 31 at the launch of the official logo for government’s free SHS policy which begins September, 2017 thanked stakeholders who have played various roles towards the realization of the programme.
