The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Upper West Akim constituency in the Eastern Region has rejected the results of the December 7 parliamentary poll announced by the Electoral Commission, which declared the National Democratic Congress’ Derrick Ohene Bekoe as winner.
Mr Bekoe polled 17, 091 while the NPP candidate, Sackey Eugene, polled 16,661 with the APC candidate polling 251 votes.
The chairman of the NPP in the constituency, Nana Obuobi, speaking to Class News, alleged there was over-voting, hence the party will seek legal action.
“The main reason is over-voting and right now we are preparing everything to go to court… We have left everything in the hands of our lawyers,” he stated.
In a related development, the party is also contesting the Tamale Central parliamentary results, citing over-voting and the alleged discovery of results added from an unknown polling station. The party is heading to court to seek nullification of voting results.
However speaking to Class News, the Northern regional secretary of the NDC, who is also a member of its legal team, Halid Abudul Rauf, said the NDC was ready to join the EC to defend the results in court.
“The results were declared and we heard lawyer Inusah Fuseini, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Tamale Central, being declared the MP-elect for that constituency. We don’t have any action to take. If they have concerns about the decision of the Electoral Commission, it is within their right to take whichever action is available to them. If they decide to go to court, I can assure you that the NDC will join the EC to defend the results of the Tamale Central parliamentary election,” he promised.
