A bereaved family in Tema Community 9 over the weekend nearly had their dead relative’s body carried away by a group of undertakers over a GHS40 debt.
The bizarre incident occurred at the Community 9 Cemetery in the full glare of mourning family members and friends who had accompanied the body for burial.
The angry undertakers defied all pleas by the bereaved family and carried the corpse shoulder-high à la pallbearers out of the casket and were returning it to the mortuary when some friends and sympathisers, on the spur of the moment, raised the GHS40 to pay the debt.
The bereaved family had apparently whisked the casket away from the mortuary without first paying the balance of GHS40. It all reportedly happened on the blind side of the undertakers as they were attending to other bodies at the time.
