Some young people at Tutu Akwapim in the Eastern Region have threatened to embark on series of demonstrations until the Traditional Council constructs a public toilet for the community.
According to them, there is only one privately owned public toilet serving the entire community, yet the traditional council is using available funds to construct a funeral/durbar ground.
They described the development as a misplaced priority and, therefore, appealed to the chief to refocus priorities. One of the disgruntled persons, Edward Sarpong who spoke to ClassFMonline.com on Thursday stated that one of the opinion leaders was arrested by the police on Wednesday.
He explained that they have legitimate concerns relating to sanitation and the health of the people of the town but if they are going to be harassed, they will not pursue the objective for the construction of the public toilet any longer.
They had intended to present a petition to the chief of the area but rescinded their decision.
In the petition, the youth appealed to Nana Appeah Anti V, Chief of Tutu, “to help us finish our public toilet project before the funeral durbar grounds. After the completion of the public toilet in the town, we the youth will help in any way to help finish the funeral grounds”.
Because of inadequate toilet facilities, the youth indicated that “people are just defecating everywhere and the town is now full of feaces”.
According to them, they have received a pledge of 50 bags of cement from the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Akuapem North, Mr Opare Addo towards constructing the public toilet. They said the governing National Democratic Congress’ parliamentary candidate, Appiah Kubi, has also promised 50 bags of cement for the public toilet project.
With all this support, the youth said they do not understand why the chiefs are not interested in the public toilet because the wanton disposal of feacal matter could lead to devastating consequences in the event of a cholera outbreak.
