Member of Parliament (MP) for Ablekuma South Fritz Baffour has revealed that the victory of Republican Donald Trump in winning the US presidential elections does not come as “a surprise” to him.
The former Minister of Information argued that “as a student of history and politics, I was not surprised”, adding: “My basic reasoning was that if the American people could vote for a neophyte black senator from Illinois as president, then it was very possible for them to vote for a rough-and-tumble white billionaire businessman with a lot of media exposure, no matter what baggage he carried.”
Americans voted for change on Wednesday, 9 November, with the election of Donald Trump as president, beating the governing Democratic Party’s candidate Hillary Clinton.
Most polls and predictions had gone in favour of Mrs Clinton but the results on Election Day did not reflect the outcome of numerous polls prior to the elections.
For Mr Baffour, who took to social media to express his opinion on Thursday, November 10, “political pundits today will attribute a lot of factors to what most claim is an electoral upset, but real time examination of what was at stake, would reveal that Trump, despite his larger-than-life persona, his arrant braggadocio and what were deemed politically incorrect utterances was very much a very electable candidate in the present American political climate”.
Meanwhile, thousands have taken to the streets to protest Mr Trump’s win. The disgruntled protesters chanted anti-Donald Trump slogans as they marched from Trump Tower and gathered near the White House.
In cities, from Boston to Los Angeles, thousands of demonstrators gathered in protest against election results. As many as 5,000 people were also at a protest in New York, police estimated. Among the issues being yelled about outside Trump Tower were immigration and other controversial topics from the campaign.
