The Board of the New Times Corporation has described the industrial action by its workers as unwarranted and unfortunate.
Staff of the state entity on Monday, September 18, demonstrated in front of their office to demand better service conditions.
They said their Managing Director, Carol Annang, has taken over the work of the national paper’s Chief Accountant, Chief Procurement Officer and Chief Auditor.
They also accused Ms Annang of disrespecting procurement processes of the corporation in the purchase of a Honda Pilot SUV for herself.
The angry workers of the news house are wondering where she got the money to buy the vehicle because they claim she is quick to point out how badly the company is on its knees, each time they demand for better service conditions.
But a letter released by the Board and signed by one Ivy Austin minutes after the demonstration said: “The attention of the Board of Director of New Times Corporation has been drawn to an industrial action by workers of New Times Corporation today, Monday, 18th September 2017. At an emergency Board meeting, the Board resolved as follows; That the action of the workers is unfortunate and unwarranted as neither the Board nor the management has failed or refused to engage with the workers through the union representatives to find the solutions to the concerns being raised.
“As a matter of fact, negotiations are on-going between management and leaders of the union. It is therefore unfortunate that whiles negotiations are on-going, the workers are resorting to a strike action without notice to management as required by the Labour Act. The Board of Directors wish to reiterate its commitment to ensuring cordial working environment.
“We therefore call on the leaders of the union to use the required process to resolve the issues instead of resorting to industrial action.”
