Interior Minister, Ambrose Dery, has revealed that teachers in Abetifi and its surrounding communities in the Eastern Region of Ghana have fled the area following threats from Fulani herdsmen.
According to him, pupils throng to their classrooms in the communities, but do not have teachers to instruct and teach them.
Mr Dery, however, said police officers have been deployed to the areas to provide security for these teachers in order for them to resume their work.
He told Accra FM’s parliamentary correspondent, Richard Appiah Sarpong, in an interview on Thursday, November 2 that: “The Fulani menace is still there, it has been with us for a long time. We have had the Operation Cow Leg to deal with. When I was even a student it came up and we are facing it now.
“We have it in Abetifi. Abetifi over the last few weeks, we have sent a number of police officers there to bring things under control. The report I got this morning is calm has been restored but in three communities in that area, we have people going to school but the teachers are not there, so the police have been directed to make sure that they provide security for the teachers to be able to go.”
He added: “We can go in and provide security temporarily, but what we need is a multi-ministerial intervention.
“What we need to do is to come with a permanent solution and to ask for stakeholders to play their part, security is a collective responsibility.”
