On its 32nd annual Synod at Aboso from the 20th to 24th April 2016, the Very Rev. Thomas Amponsah Donkor won a keenly contested election; beating his contender Very Rev. Dr. Boafo by a three (3) vote margin. Three candidates were shortlisted for the election of a Bishop; Very Rev. Thomas Amponsah Donkor, Very Rev. Dr. Boafo and Very Rev. De-Graft Brace. The Very Rev. Brace stepped down at the start of the election owing to the fact he was a week before elected as Bishop-elect for the Sekondi Diocese. The Very Rev. Amponsah Donkor pulled fifty nine (59) as against fifty six (56) by Very Rev. Dr. Boafo. The Synod came to end on Sunday 24th April 2016. The theme for the Synod was “Witnessing to Christ; Methodist Identity and Social Impact – The Way Forward”.
Delivering his acceptance speech, Very Rev. Amponsah Donkor thanked the synod members for the trust they had reposed in him and asked for their continuous support. “I am overwhelmed by the turn of events here. I thank God Almighty for the victory and thank you synod members for your support. Let us continuously work together in the kingdom business”.
Very Reverend Amponsah-Donkor responded to the call of God to enter into full ministry in 1992 at Atieku in the Tarkwa Diocese. He served as a secretary to the Diocesan steering committee that hosted the connectional Methofest in 2003 in Kumasi.
In 2011, Very Rev. Amponsah-Donkor was appointed the Diocesan administrator until October 2012 when he was appointed the assistant synod secretary for the Kumasi Diocese. He is currently the synod secretary for the Tarkwa Diocese. He is also a member of the connectional legal advisory team of the Methodist Church Ghana and the legal adviser to Nickseth Construction Company in Kumasi.
Very Rev. Amponsah-Donkor also holds a Bachelor of Laws degree awarded by the KUNST and a professional law degree from the Ghana School of Law in Accra. He was called to the bar as Barrister-at-Law and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Ghana on October 2, 2009.
The Very Rev. Amponsah- Donkor is married to Mrs. Esther Amponsah-Donkor and has been blessed with three children; Prince Edward Amponsah-Donkor, Jewel Yeboah Amponsah-Donkor and Audrey Ewuradwoa Amponsah-Donkor.
Very Rev. Amponsah-Donkor will take over from the Right Rev. Thomas C. Barffo who was ushered into office in 2010. Right Rev. Thomas Christian Barffo delivering a sermon urged Christians particularly pastors and church leaders to eschew issues of tribalism in church politics and administration. He rather urged them to fetch all resources at their disposal to impact positively the lives of their congregants and Ghanaians in general. He prayed for calm and successful elections and admonished all Ghanaians to approach the up-coming general elections without mudslinging and cacophony of lies but with a modicum of respect and decorum.
