Kandahar Boys, a youth group affiliated to the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), has handed over to the police keys to the secretariat of the Tamale Teaching Hospital, which they locked up.
The Kandahar Boys locked the secretariat housing the office of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Prosper Akangbon, on Tuesday February 21 as part of measures to thwart an intended demonstration by some youth group and nurses of the facility.
But upon the visit of the Regional Minister Salifu Saeed, the group handed over the keys of the locked office to the police.
The Northern Regional Secretary of the NPP, Sulley Salifu, speaking to Class News, said the party would ensure that its youth used appropriate channels to address their grievances.
“Even though we consider some of our supporters were there [at the hospital], they [did] not go there as a party to disturb or distract activities. If you get to the Tamale Teaching Hospital, you will know that the Tamale Concerned Citizens had earlier issued statements condemning the management of the teaching hospital for the lack of certain facilities such as oxygen, lack of gloves and their managerial style, so it is not just an NPP matter,” he stated.
“So what we, as a party in the region, [are] doing and will continue to do is to engage our members and other people to use the laid down channels to seek redress to their problems. Fortunately, the Northern Regional Minister has assumed office today and I believe with his presence now the youth and people who are interested in ensuring that the hospital is managed well will pass their concerns to the Regional Minister and I believe they can address the issue and locking up of offices will be a thing of the past.”
