In view of the recent cases of suicides recorded across the country, the Mental Health Authority will be organising a health walk in Accra to raise awareness on the phenomenon.
The Public Relations Officer of the Authority, Kweku Brobbey, said there was the need to educate the general public that suicides are not the option in dealing with problems, hence the health walk.
He told Chief Jerry Forson, host of Ghana Yensom, on Accra100.5FM on Friday March 31 that the walk starts at the El Wak Stadium and ends at the University of Ghana. Key speakers, he said, will encourage the public to desist from such acts.
He added: “The rate at which the country is recording suicide cases is disturbing and a trend that must be dealt with immediately. For this reason, the Mental Health Authority, together with a number of stakeholders, especially NGOs such as Hope Alliance and others which are into mental health, is embarking on the awareness creation. This, we believe will sensitise the public on suicides and the need to avoid them.
“Tomorrow, the 1st of April, at exactly 7am, all of us will be converging at the El Wak Stadium and embark on a health walk from that point to the University of Ghana.”
