Deputy General Secretary of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) Koku Anyidoho has accused the General Secretary of the Christian Council of Ghana, Rev. Dr Opuni Frimpong of doing the bidding of the largest opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).
According to him, the man of God’s public pronouncement on political issues is geared towards pushing the agenda of the NPP, hence advised Rev Dr Opuni Frimpong to desist from such conduct lest he embarrasses himself and the clergy.
The Christian Council of Ghana and the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council have asked the Electoral Commission (EC) to implement the Supreme Court’s ruling on the voter’s register.
The two bodies argued considering the limited months the nation has to the November 2016 polls, the EC has to expedite action to ensure the electoral register is cleaned as directed by the Apex court.
A joint communiqué issued after a meeting in Accra said the EC must rid the register of persons who registered with the National Health Insurance Cards.
Described by many as a landmark ruling, the Supreme Court on May 5, 2016, ordered the Electoral Commission to take immediate steps to delete names of unqualified person from the register and give them another opportunity to register using lawful means.
This follows a previous ruling by the court in a case brought by a former National Youth Organiser of the People’s National Convention (PNC), Abu Ramadan, in which the court ruled that NHIS card could not be sufficient proof of citizenship.
General Secretary of the Christian Council of Ghana, Rev. Dr Opuni Frimpong in an interview on Joy FM said “So far as the EC has not given us any impression to believe that it doesn’t understand the Supreme Court’s ruling, it has to implement it.
“If the EC understands what the Supreme Court has asked it to do then as the ruling said immediately, it has to do so.”
But speaking to Fiifi Banson on Anopa Kasapa on Kasapa 102.5 FM, Koku Anyidoho flayed Rev. Dr Opuni Frimpong over his remarks, saying the EC is doing precisely what the Supreme Court has asked it to do.
“He doesn’t even understand the Supreme Court ruling but yet he wants to comment on it…he must bow down his head in shame. It’s not the Christian Council, it’s Opuni Frimpong. Why, didn’t we see Rev. Deegbe as Secretary of the Christian Council, he was more circumspect; he chose his words carefully, Opuni Frimpong must bow down his head in shame. He must stop the NPP politics; it’s too much, it is nauseating.
“If the Christian council is more concerned, Opuni Frimpong must be more concerned about Mac Manu saying the NPP will declare his own results, Christian Council should be more concerned about Kofi Jumah saying blood should flow, they must also be concerned about Ken Agyepong saying they’ll lynch polling agents. That one is not of concern to Opuni Frimpong? If he doesn’t understand the judgment of the Supreme Court, he should not embarrass the church with his comments, we all belong to churches. To the extent that the clergy will create problems for the church some of us will speak; we’ll not insult the clergymen, but we’ll speak because they are human beings and are also fallible.”
