The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has called on government and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) to accelerate processes towards clearing all salary arrears owed teachers.
Stakeholders resolved that disbursement of funds and subsequent salaries and allowances should be done by October 2016 but the association has expressed displeasure at the rate at which qualified teachers are being validated ahead of the payment.
“GNAT urges FWSC, the Audit Service, and the Ministry of Finance to expedite action on the validation exercise,” it stated in a communiqué signed by its acting National President, Philippa Larsen, on September 2 after a National Council meeting at the GNAT Village at Abankro, near Ejisu, in the Ashanti Region held from Monday to Friday.
The group also stated that it was necessary for government to “release, as a matter of urgency, all outstanding grants” for the Capitation, School Feeding and the Progressively Free Senior High School programmes as well as all others to first and second cycle schools before the beginning of the 2016/2017 academic year “in order not to disrupt teaching and learning”.
