As an annual ritual, Citi FM will this year celebrate the “Help a Christmas Child Project” with children in Sota and Abonya, both in Accra on Boxing Day. Sota and Abonya are located in the Shai Osudoku District of the Greater Accra Region. This is the first time Citi FM is extending this gesture to children in the two communities. Residents of Sota are predominantly farmers; cultivating different types of crops and rearing animals for a living.
Why Sota and Abonya were chosen The Head of Events at Citi FM Jessica Opare Saforo explained on Tuesday that the station thought the two towns fit the criteria of what the station wanted. “Over the years we have put smiles on the faces of children and this year we just thought we should extend this gesture to children in Sota and Abonya, she explained.” Jessica added: “Sota and Abonya are not too far from the capital Accra but they lack certain basic needs, such as a clinic and access to potable water, motorable roads among others. As a station that believes in sharing, our focus this year was too look for communities that were in the region but were deprived in a way and celebrate the Christmas with them.”
Children in the two communities are excited that Citi FM this time round was bringing the Help a Christmas Child project to their doorsteps. Expectation One child, Enoch Jatey who dreams of becoming a pilot in future, could not hide his excitement; “I am so happy you will come here and celebrate with us, but I want a dress, shoes and jollof rice when you come,” he requested. Ishmael Teye Tetteh, 9, also wanted similar items which he believed would make the Christmas celebration worth remembering. Another child, who only gave her name as Gloria also had a list of items she wanted for Christmas. “Rice and chicken stew; shoe for the Christmas celebration and for school and dress.”
