The Director of Training, Testing and Licensing at the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), Cheyuo Wienna Musah, has said the new ‘smart’ drivers licence being introduced is best for the country due to its security features.
According to him, the new card is “secure, can facilitate trade and interconnectivity,” therefore, should be accepted by all stakeholders.
His comments come on the heels of the Ghana Drivers and Car Owners Association kicking against moves by the DVLA to introduce a new smart driving licence.
The new smart licence comes with a security-embedded chip to discourage counterfeiting.
The chip will contain the driver’s information which will be linked to the new national identification system in a safe manner.
But an association of commercial drivers says the DVLA should “refrain from trying to alter the current licensing process for drivers” or face the wrath of its members.
Speaking in an interview with Chief Jerry Forson, host of the Ghana Yensom on Accra 100.5FM on Wednesday October 25, Mr Musah said: “All over the world, countries frequently change their licences to add new features to it. Japan recently upgraded their licences to add more security features.
“Here in Ghana, printing issue is a reason for us to move on. This is a document that is secure, a document that can facilitate trade and interconnectivity.
“So, we think that as an authority that must produce credible documents to people, the smart drivers licence is the best way for us.”
He said all the driver unions have been educated about the new licence. “We had a meeting with all the other stakeholders outside of the board level and we discussed the features that have just been included in the document. We went to meet all the driver unions and we took them through the new programme, how the licences have migrated over the years. We have asked them to ask all the necessary questions so we have had engagements.”
