The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Charlotte Osei, has said she was not distracted from her duties as the chair of the election management body amid allegations that she got her job through sexual favours.
It would be recalled that Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, on Saturday June 25 2016 during the campaign launch for Asokwa MP Patricia Appeagyei in Kumasi, said Mrs Osei had been appointed to her current position after she offered her “derriere in exchange”, a comment he has apologised for following the flak heaped on him by many Ghanaians.
Commenting on the matter, Mrs Osei, speaking on the International Women’s Day edition of the Super Morning Show on Joy FM on Wednesday 8 March, said: “You know that as a woman you are coming into a space that men think they own and men believe they should keep that space to themselves, so they are going to throw everything at you just to get you out of that space. Once you recognise that, then you recognise those kinds of comments for the distractions that they are and you just focus on doing what you have been called to do and to do an excellent job. And so I don’t get my sense of self from people; I start from God.
“What God tells me is what matters to me. If God says go and do this assignment, I may not like the assignment but I have to trust that there is a reason why I have been asked to go and do it and also you believe that the person who has sent you will empower you to do it. So for me that is my starting point, and so I go in with that confidence that comes from the person who has given me the assignment.”
