President-elect Nana Akufo-Addo’s appointment of a National Security Minister-designate, in addition to a National Security Coordinator and National Security Advisor, are “a necessary step to ensure Ghana’s security is not compromised,” security analyst Irbard Ibrahim has said.
According to him, each of the appointees has a unique role to play, for which reason the three National Security positions should not be interpreted as a duplication of roles.
Mr Akufo-Addo, who will be sworn in as president on January 7, 2017, on Wednesday January 4, during a press conference, announced his first batch of appointees, with Mr Brigadier General Emmanuel Okyere as National Security Advisor while Joshua Kyeremeh was named National Security Coordinator. Mr Albert Kan Dapaah has been appointed as National Security Minister, pending his vetting by parliament.
But according to Mr Ibrahim, security remains the “number one priority” of all countries across the world, hence the multiple portfolios for the country’s security apparatus are in the right direction.
He explained that the National Security Advisor will be required to brief the president and offer counsel regarding what measures should be taken to hold off security threats while the National Security coordinator controls the overall security apparatus and collaborates with the various security agencies. The National Security Minister, he added, will link up with the Defence Minister to fend off external aggression.
“So I don’t see this as a duplication of mandates or responsibility. So I believe it is in order,” he told Nana Ama Osei-Tutu on Accra News Wednesday.
“I believe that all in all the president-elect has put together a very solid team and I believe they can do a good job, and their résumé indicates they will perform creditably.”
