If President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo wants to succeed in his One District-One-Factory programme, then he must find a lasting solution to the energy crisis that bedevilled the country, Kofi Anokye, a building engineer and CEO of KOANS Estates, has said.
According to him, electricity is needed to drive the economy in every part of the world, hence the problem of irregular supply of electricity must be tackled before the start of the 1-District-1-Factory programme.
Speaking in an interview with Chief Jerry Forson, host of Ghana Yensom on Accra100.5FM on Wednesday April 5, Mr Anokye said: “If this government wants to succeed in its industrialisation drive, it must tackle the energy crisis once and for all.
“The AMERI plant that was brought into the country by the past government was a cheap solution to the ‘dumsor’ and I can tell you that every cheap thing turns out to be very expensive, and that is why we are paying huge electricity bills. The one who brought the plant was eventually removed from office – and I am talking about Dr Kwabena Donkor. And so I ask myself, ‘If the plant was good and did solve the problem, why sack him?’
“Ghana is 60, so we need a reliable and sustainable form of energy. Let us think outside the box and make do with what we have.
“Any time we encounter a problem we need to look within for how best we can solve the problem from within. We cannot go and pick generators from other places.”
He further indicated that the call for the country to turn to solar energy was out of place because solar electricity cannot meet all of the country’s energy needs.
“People are advocating renewable energy – solar, wind energy and the rest, but the capacity they generate are woefully inadequate,” Mr Anokye noted.
