Chairman of Groupe Nduom (GN), Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom, has admonished student leaders against jumping into active politics immediately after completing university since that could make them susceptible to being corrupted by the already corrupt political system.
Dr. Nduom rather urged university graduates to first ensure they were professions and gainfully employed to be able to take care of themselves and their families before entering into politics.
Dr.Nduom gave the admonition when the leadership of the University of Ghana–Legon and Ghana Institute Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), Student Representative Councils (SRCs) paid a courtesy call on him at his office yesterday.
The businessman bemoaned the situation where fresh university graduates were yearning to enter into full time politics which did not guarantee a safe job, saying that is not the best.
“You should have a profession so you can take care of your family…, so resist the temptation to be corrupt,” Dr. Nduom added.
He said on his priority list, politics came last next to business, family and faith, since politics was not a career but rather a public service.
Dr. Nduom, who was the 2012 presidential candidate of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), also advised the students to take their faith serious since faith guides one to know what is right and what is wrong.
He, therefore, condemned the widespread corruption in the country since those engaged in the illegal act knew that it was wrong to be corrupt.
He charged them to take advantage of the opportunity given them to study at the institutions of highest learning in order to better their lives to become useful to society.
He observed that due to economic and other challenges that confront Ghanaians on a daily basis, not many young people get the opportunity to climb the educational ladder up to the tertiary level, pointing out that under such circumstances one was privileged to have tertiary education.
“A small percentage get chance to go to senior high school and even a smaller percentage progresses to the tertiary level….if you had the opportunity to go to senior high and beyond, then you should count yourselves lucky,” he added.
Earlier, President of GIMPA SRC, Clement Yeboah, conveyed the appreciation of the students of GIMPA to Dr. Nduom for his continuous support to the institution.
GIMPA, this year, hosted Dr. Nduom on its campus during which he gave a talk on entrepreneurship.
He said the courtesy call on the business magnate was to afford them another opportunity to drink from his (Nduom) fountain of wisdom and tap into his experiences in life.
Mr. Yeboah said he and his colleague executive members wanted to leave a legacy at GIMPA and therefore appealed to Dr. Nduom whom they considered as a mentor to help them make the SRC a better institution.
The GIMPA executive member announced that plans were far advanced to put up a legacy project for the benefit of GIMPA students and hinted that they would need the support of Dr. Nduom to execute it.
For his part, President of University of Ghana SRC, Davis Ohene Fobi, said their call on Dr. Nduom was to tap into his vast knowledge in leadership having served in several capacities in politics and his success as an entrepreneur.
Mr. Ohene Fobi said they were marvelled at the success story of Dr. Nduom and since most of them were aspiring to become leaders in future, they thought it wise to take lessons from him.
