A source within the government has described as “fake” a statement circulating on social media purportedly coming from the presidency, which said among other things that: “government is unable to yield to the request” of former president John Dramani Mahama to keep his current official residence as part of his retirement package.
The statement, attributed to acting Communications Director at the presidency, Mr Eugene Arhin, said: “The position of government is that the recommendations in the Article 71 Office Holders Emoluments Committee headed by Prof Dora Francisca Edu-Buandoh be implemented.”
It added: “Government is also aware of the outstanding accommodation issues with former president [John] Agyekum Kufuor and will soon begin the process of an amicable settlement.”
However, a source within government confirmed to ClassFMonline.com that the statement was “fake”.
There is currently a controversy surrounding former President Mahama’s request to keep his official residence. While the outgone government said an agreement was reached between the two parties for Mr Mahama to keep his residence as part of his ex gratia, the new government has denied there being any such agreement. Per the constitution, Mr Mahama was supposed to have vacated his residence a day before the investiture of the new president.
