The President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Roland Affail Monney, has appealed to the Ghana National Fire Service to organise periodic training on firefighting for journalists and others in the various media houses across the country.
According to him, it is important for the workers to acquire basic knowledge in dousing infernos before calling on personnel of the service to intervene.
His comments come in the wake of the fire that gutted the Coconut Grove Regency Hotel in Accra on Saturday April 22. The hotel, owned by businessman and politician Dr Papa Kwesi Nduom, caught fire and destroyed several items. No one was hurt in the inferno.
The hotel building also houses Amansan Television, owned by Dr Nduom.
Dr Money, who visited the scene on Monday April 24 to inspect the level of damage done to the television station, told journalists that it was important for all and sundry to be acquainted with fire safety tips as a way of preventing the disaster from happening.
Accra News’ Nana Amoako Gyampah, who accompanied the GJA president, reported that Dr Monney appealed to the Fire Service to organise training workshops for journalists.
