State power distributor Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has been fined GHS202,640 by utilities regulator Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC).
PURC said ECG is being punished for breaching LI 1861 and LI 1935.
The company and its leaders refused to sell prepaid power to customers during a recent 3-day strike in protest to the proposed privatisation of ECG. The situation caused a lot of discomfort to both domestic and industrial customers who had to struggle to keep their homes and businesses lit.
In a statement, PURC said it “wishes to indicate that the commission has the mandate to protect the interest of the consumer and ensure the financial viability of the utility service provider and we will tip this balance carefully and equitably by using all the relevant Laws and Regulations available to assist us fulfill our regulatory mandate.”
