Parliament on Wednesday August 3 approved the Public Financial Management Bill, which seeks to punish public officials who misappropriate state funds.
The bill also seeks to improve on the financial management of the country as well as ensure accountability and transparency in the utilisation of public funds.
The bill, after it has received presidential assent, will also address the lamentations of the Auditor General and the Public Accounts Committee over the lack of commitment to punish public officers cited for financial malfeasance.
Public officials who misappropriate state funds will receive a maximum of five years in jail.
