Nurses at the Accra Psychiatric Hospital have called off their strike.
The Ministry of Health has provided some of the medication and logistics they have been clamouring for, which caused them to begin an indefinite strike at the end of last month.
Jamila Hussein, Chairperson for the nurses told Class News in an interview that: “Based on the items we have received so far – that is the logistics, the detergents and the medication – we can tell that the minister has shown keen and fair commitment so it will be wise for us to come back to work and then follow up on the rest of the things he is supposed to bring.
“So officially, based on the things we have, we can say the place is safe enough for us to come back to work, so we are coming back to work, God willing tomorrow,” she said.
The nurses had earlier said the absence of essential drugs needed to calm the inmates of the hospital were not available, thus, making the place a “dangerous” environment to work in.
Ms Hussein, however, said on Monday that “a Pick-Up came in with those specific medications so we are good to go.”
She, however, warned that they will not hesitate to abandon the place again “…should they falter,” to bring the rest of the logistics and funds for running the place as the ministry has promised. “… They supply, we work; they don’t supply, we leave the place.”
