President John Dramani Mahama on Tuesday commissioned an 8.5 million dollar water project at Navrongo in the Kassena-Nankana Municipality of the Upper East Region.
The facility would provide about 9000 gallons of water daily which far exceeds the current daily supply of 6000 gallons of water to the people in the area.
The Project expansion is expected to serve the growing population of the Municipality and its environs until 2020.
The President also cut the sod for the construction of a water treatment plant at the Tono Dam which would augment the Vea irrigation dam in supplying treated water to Navrongo, Paga, Chuchuliga and Bolgatanga when completed.
At a durbar of the Chiefs and people in Navrongo, the Acting Navro-Pio, Pe Arthur Wekem, bestowed on President Mahama the title, “Wepia”, which literally means ‘God’s Gift’ in the Kassem Language.
He thanked the President for the numerous development projects undertaken in the Municipality.
He lauded President Mahama for appointing the sons of the area, Justice Scott Pwamang to the Supreme Court, and Mr Mark Woyongo, now a Minister of State at the Presidency after having served in various other capacities in the NDC government.
The Navro- Pio called on the President to expedite action on transforming the University for Development Studies Campus in Navrongo into an autonomous body as proposed by government, and pledged the readiness of the Traditional Council to provide land for the take off of the project.
President Mahama stated that under his leadership, the country had seen numerous infrastructural development particularly in education, roads, and health facilities among others and appealed to the people to renew his mandate to enable him to do more.
Mr Mark Woyongo, the Member of Parliament for Navrongo Central Constituency, indicated that with the numerous development projects in the area such as the construction and expansion of water, roads, schools, and health facilities, as well as the construction and de-silting of dams coupled with the expansion of the Rural Electrification projects, there was a bright future for the party in the constituency.
He stated that plans were advanced to asphalt the Navrongo township roads, expand urban roads as well as present computers to some selected schools in the constituency.
