The presidential nominee of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), Dr Papa Kwesi Nduom, has said it is the responsibility of governments to protect their seas from intruders.
He advised fishermen not to be bought with such items as outboard motors and fishing nets but vote the PPP into power to protect Ghana’s waters.
“People who are in power, sometimes when they look at us who come from the fishing community, they think we are foolish people. They wait until the time for election and then they will bring outboard motor, they will give you fishing net, and they will say clap for us. But don’t take that trick again,” he told fisherfolk in the Central Region.
“All of this time, we all know that if you go up on the seas and you go there and you don’t catch any fish, what is the use of the outboard motor that they will give you? Because government’s job is to go up on the seas and protect the sea and to make sure the Japanese and Koreans don’t come to destroy the sea, that some people don’t take lights to go and destroy what is happening there, and we are sitting here and allowing foreigners to come and not only catch the big fishes but even fingerlings. So, when you go there, you don’t catch any fish. So, what is the use of having a government? What is the use of having someone as president if they cannot protect the sea for you?”
Dr Nduom said a PPP government would not supply outboard motors and fishing nets during elections but will rather protect the sea for their welfare.
“We from the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), we know what the problems are, we will not come and give you fishing net, we will not come and say take outboard motor, that is not what we want. We want a government that will come and protect the sea so that the fingerlings will grow up so that next time when you go fishing, you will see the fish and the fish will come to you – that is what we are looking for,” he assured.
