The Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) will be summoned before the Parliamentary Select Committee on Defence and Interior, to provide answers regarding the recent bloody clash between some military and police personnel in Tamale in the Northern Region, if the committee is unsatisfied with the eventual findings of probes being conducted by the two security institutions about the brawl, Collins Owusu Amakwa, Deputy Chair of the committee, has said.
There was a free-for-all bloody fight between some police and military personnel on Wednesday, 16 May.
The brawl ensued after a group of army personnel in the region went on the rampage and attacked police officers following an attempt by a military personnel to escape from police custody after returning from court that day.
The army personnel took to his heels and other military officers prevented the police officers on duty from re-arresting him, resulting in a free-for-all fight.
Some of the military men decided to beat up any police officer they identified. They also attacked cops stationed at various banks.
Mr Owusu Amakwa, who is also the Member of Parliament for Manhyia North, told Chief Jerry Forson on Ghana Yensom on Accra100.5FM on Thursday, 17 May that on 21 April 2018, the IGP, David Asante-Apeatu, and the CDS, Major General Obed Akwa, drew a road map to prevent such clashes from happening.
“What happened yesterday was unfortunate, it was a dent on the image of the security of Ghana and we must all condemn it,” he said.
The lawmaker added: “I understand investigations are being conducted into this matter, we will wait for the final report of that investigation and if we are not satisfied, the Committee will summon the IGP and the CDS to come and explain why their own road map failed.”
