The newly-formed government after the December 7 presidential and parliamentary elections has not yet taken over the affairs of the state and so there is the need for the incumbent government to manage the country and deal with miscreants fomenting trouble after the poll, Dr Eric Oduro-Osae, Dean of Graduate Studies, Institute of Local Government Studies, has said.
His comment follows reported cases of hawkers indicating their intention to return onto the streets to sell because a new government has been elected into office. Some hawkers at the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange are returning onto the streets, claiming that their party is now in power. There are also reported cases of post-electoral violence in some parts of the country.
However, Dr Oduo-Sae has said this impunity must be dealt with immediately by the John Mahama led government.
Speaking in an interview with Chief Jerry Forson, host of Ghana Yensom on Accra 100.5FM on Tuesday December 13, he said: “This is an indiscipline behaviour and indiscipline talk on the part of the people. Every Assembly in Ghana has bye-laws and so when it happens that the people are taking the laws into their own hands, we expect that the Assembly under the leadership of the District Chief Executives and technical officers will fully enforce their bye-laws.”
He added: “Secondly, the security agencies should up their game. They should make sure that important national installations are protected and deal with anybody who takes the laws into their own hands. When the security agencies deal with one or two or three people it will serve as a deterrent to the others.
“The new government has not yet taken over and so we need to manage the country as if everything is normal. No District Chief Executive has been removed from office yet, they are still the District Chief Executive of their respective districts and so they should work. It is an indiscipline behavior for the hawkers to say they are returning onto the streets.”
